Abstract
The article examines the key aspects of Chinese military policy aimed to counter the nuclear threat posed by the USA in the early years of the Republic of China. Having no real industrial and scientific potential to implement its own nuclear project, the government pursued a defensive policy, focusing on protection against a potential nuclear strike. The measures taken by China include the improving the sustainability of its own infrastructure for the nuclear strikes and the security of industrial facilities and the population. However, the most Chinese leaders during the early years of PRC history considered it necessary to accelerate the creation of China’s own nuclear weapons, and thereby to obtain the position of a legitimate member of the nuclear club.
